Colorado's published enrollment fell to 870,793 students

Colorado recorded 870,793 students in 2025–2026, down 10,272. The original annual files show a smaller prior-year decline, but not the previously reported near-flat count.

Correction (October 8, 2026): The prior-year enrollment loss was 399 students, rather than the previously reported 206. This article now uses the original annual-file totals consistently and limits historical comparisons to that checked window. Unsupported projections and summaries of other stories have been removed.

Colorado recorded 870,793 public-school students in 2025–2026, last school year's count and the most recent published enrollment data. That was 10,272 fewer students than in 2024–2025, a decline of 1.2%.

The loss followed a much smaller decline. The original annual files report 881,464 students in 2023–2024 and 881,065 in 2024–2025: a drop of 399 students, or 0.05%. The smaller loss was an observed change, not evidence that enrollment had reached a lasting floor.

The Colorado Department of Education's membership page explains the annual enrollment collection and links its published files. The figures here use each school year's original membership files consistently; a later revision on the landing page is not inserted into the historical panel.

Colorado original annual statewide membership

The historical comparison has limits

The 2025–2026 count is the lowest in the twelve-year original-file window, from 2014–2015 through 2025–2026. Membership peaked within that window at 913,223 students in 2019–2020. The subsequent net loss of 42,430 students amounts to 4.6% of that published peak total.

The latest annual loss is the largest in that window after excluding 2020–2021 and 2021–2022. That comparison does not establish an all-time record or assign a cause to the losses.

The three preceding annual comparisons together produced a net loss of 5,452 students, measured between 2021–2022 and 2024–2025. It is a comparison of observed totals, not the difference between actual enrollment and a projected trajectory.

Colorado annual membership changes

What the count includes

The final-year files contain 186 reported organization totals and 1,887 school membership records. Reported organizations include administrative entities as well as geographic school districts, so the organization count should not be read as a count of interchangeable districts.

The statewide count is the published total. It is not reconstructed by adding only school records or demographic categories with visible counts. This distinction matters where membership is reported outside a named school or a category remains unknown.

Largest reported organization membership totals in the final year

Annual totals establish the scale and timing of membership changes. They do not identify which departing students moved, transferred, changed programs or left for another reason. Grade-level membership also does not establish how many students will enroll in later years.

Those limits leave a clear measured result: the smaller prior decline did not persist in the most recent published comparison. Future enrollment must be checked against subsequent annual records.
